When you think of a movie-making powerhouse, Douglas County might not be the first thing that comes to mind.
But over the years, the county has been home to the sets of many major motion pictures. Exploring the county, you might run into signs highlighting the Douglas County Film Trail, an initiative to catalog all the places that appear in your favorite movies and shows filmed in the area. With Stranger Things, Cobra Kai, and The Hunger Games under its belt, Douglas County shows that you don’t have to be in the heart of Atlanta to see your favorite stars out and about.
The Best Stops on the Douglas County Film Trail
Tiffany’s Kitchen
There’s few Netflix shows that have made a cultural impact like Stranger Things, and you can find the site of an iconic scene right by Douglasville. Known as Benny’s Diner in the show, Tiffany’s Kitchen is a popular spot for fans to visit. If you’re lucky, you might even get to sit at the same table as Benny and Eleven.
Sweetwater Creek State Park
Sweetwater Creek State Park has plenty to offer local residents, but it’s been used in more films than you might realize. From several Hunger Games movies to Avengers: Infinity War, the wild woods of Sweetwater Creek might look a little more fantastical than you realize.
The Old Douglas County Courthouse Museum
A standout among the buildings of Downtown Douglasville, this old courthouse was converted into a museum with a retro 50’s type feel. It was a perfect spot to film The Founder, the McDonald’s origin story, and also had a quick cameo in Stranger Things.
Boat Rock
An urban boulder field known more for rock climbing by the general population (and our son), Boat Rock has found its place on the screen as well. Managed by the SCC as a public park, it served as a training ground in Cobra Kai and the legendary Skull Rock in Stranger Things. It was also a great place for Young Thug, Gunna, and Lil Baby to lay down some bars!
Champ’s Clock Shop
Taking a different sort of approach to the filmmaking process, the Champ’s Clock Shop team acted as consultants in a movie starring Jack Black. Known for its wide array of cuckoo clocks, many of them were used as props in the movie, and operated as set pieces for the film The House With a Clock in Its Walls.
Douglas County Sentinel
Another retro themed set piece, the Douglas County Sentinel's office interior took on new life as a 1960s bank for the Samuel L. Jackson feature The Banker.
Foxhall Resort
Known for its incredible atmosphere, Foxhall was most notably used as a set for the reality show Love is Blind. You can find out more about Foxhall in our previous blog here.
Pine Mountain Gold Museum
We wrote about the gold museum not too long ago, but we didn't mention that a couple of movies were also filmed here, one starring the legendary John Travolta! Guess there's two good dancers in Douglasville...
Tributary
Finally, our very own Tributary was used as the neighborhood to film Killers starring Ashton Kutcher and Catherine Heigel, while we lived there as a matter of fact! It was a fun neighborhood event to spot the stars and watch the car chase scenes being filmed right on our streets.
